Legendary Hearts, Repairs, Horse Macgyver, Soft Power – Sunday School, Public Bar, North Melbourne, VIC (2014-05-04)

Soft Power PosterI knew that I had to catch Soft Power while Andrew was down in Melbourne playing shows, this Sunday School was a perfect opportunity.

Legendary Hearts is Andrew Cowie (Angel Eyes, Match Fixer) and Kieran Hegarty (Superstar). They currently have a cassette out via Not Not Fun (which I’m still chasing a copy of, but I really, really like what I’ve been able to hear so far).

Excellent set from Sydney’s Horse Macgyver. Really good. Don’t wanna spoil too much.

Soft Power is Andrew McLellan (Cured Pink, Greg Boring) and Joel Stern (Sky Needle, Greg Boring, Baked Light). If those names mean anything to you (and, let’s be honest, if you’re reading this then they almost certainly do), you can begin to get an idea of just how good Soft Power is. They’ve recently released an excellent LP titled If You Come Around: You Know What Happens via All Day Breakfast (who you might remember from their excellent Brisbane 2012 cassette comp). That LP is (as I said) excellent and you should definitely buy it, but it also sounds very little like this set. Whereas the LP is a bit more murky and ‘free’ sounding, this set (at least in it’s instrumentation) is rigid, mechanical and pummelling. I later discovered that the LP was recorded before Stern and Mclellan had figured how to sync their equipment together properly, so that might be part of the story. Perhaps the biggest departure comes in McLellan’s vocals. Spat and yelped grotesque scats, improvised (?) whooping and hollering, growls and grunts, all familiar to anyone who has seen a recent incarnation of the Cured Pink band. A unique experience, an essential document.
