Tlaotlon, School Girl Report, Where Were You At Lunch, Footy – Monday Night Mass, Northcote Social Club, Northcote, VIC (2013-09-30)

Footy MNM PosterAnother awesome Monday Night Mass, this time from the weirder end of the spectrum. I’m pretty sure that School Girl Report put this gig together, and I’d been wanting to see them since picking up a copy of their Success is Dating cassette (through label Do Your Block, CD-R via Heavy Lows), and reading Andrew McLellan’s excellent interview with the band via Crawlspace. This show was quite a different beast, but I’ll speak more on that later. In support were Tlaotlon, Footy (who I’d been trying to see for a while), and the always excellent Were Were You At Lunch.

TLAOTLON
Another bafflingly beautiful set from Tlaotlon (and I mean that in a very literal sense). My brain tries to keep up with this stuff and eventually just gives up – that’s when the magic happens.

SCHOOL GIRL REPORT
So, I kinda knew that this School Girl Report show might be different to the Success Is Dating tape – the Crawlspace interview mentioned CDJs and sampling their own recordings. The first half of the set was pretty similar to the recordings I had heard; a strange meeting of prepared guitar noodlings and rhythmic dance beats. Halfway through the set the duo moved from their instruments to what looked like an elaborate CDJ setup and began to, in a very genuine sense of the word, play. Not really looking like they had a full understanding of what they were doing, the band spent the remaining ten minutes of their set (expressed in this recording as one single track) creating chopped rhythms out of themselves. Very, very interesting.

WHERE WERE YOU AT LUNCH
I’ve always been a big fan of these guys – one of my first posts on this blog was basically one big “holy shit check this out”. Just as awesome a set as always.

FOOTY
Footy is the duo of Lewis Mulvey and Paddy Gordon. Both on electronic piano, they create astonishingly gorgeous soundscapes. Perhaps improvised, I’m not entirely sure, the beauty in this music (for me at least) is it’s ease in progressing without rush. Occasionally somebody will open the door between the NSC band room and beer garden and the sound of people drinking, laughing and talking bleeds into the room. Kinda funny.
