Gugg, Superstar, A Band Called Life – A Band Called Life 7” Launch, The Northcote Social Club, Northcote, VIC (2013-08-04)

A Band Called Life PosterThis show was the launch of the new self-titled 7″ EP by A Band Called Life, compiled by the ever reliable Alberts Basement from a rehearsal recorded by the band in Tasmania back in 2004. The show was memorable for a variety of reasons that will soon become apparent as I go into more detail under the individual sets. Not many people came to this show, which in and of itself is a bummer, but resulted in a really nice sounding recording.

GUGG
Gugg is the duo of Alex Vivian (Always) and Christopher Hill (Moffarfarrah, Porpoise Torture). As somebody who is only familiar with a few of Hill’s projects, Gugg immediately calls to mind his work under the Moffarfarrah alias in which he uses his voice (moans, gargles, whines and grunts) to create very strange, at times almost playful, noise. Gugg further explores this territory; Vivian and Hill both solely use their voices to play alongside a cassette backing track (full of Saturday morning cartoon sound effects and other strangely familiar noises), interacting with both each other and the prerecorded material. Very interesting stuff.

SUPERSTAR
Since their show upstairs at The Tote I hadn’t seen Superstar again, nor had the chance to check out their recorded stuff, so I pretty much came into this gig not super familiar with what they do. I’ll have to get a record or something, these guys are interesting.

A BAND CALLED LIFE
A Band Called Life seems to be, from what I can dig up, the always active/inactive project of Adam Best and Karl von Bamberger (Mad Nanna, Horse Mania, Hammering The Cramps). This gig was one of the two shows put on over the weekend to launch the band’s latest 7″ EP on Alberts Basement. By far the most notable thing about this set is that Adam Best was in Tasmania for the entirety of it; he sung vocals for the band via a mobile phone plugged into a guitar amplifier (and was represented on stage by a mannequin with a hand-drawn face). As a result Pat o’Brien (Mad Nanna) stepped in to help out on keyboards. A really amazing, unique set.
