Leather Towel, Mark Sultan – The Gasometer, Collingwood, VIC (2013-07-04)

Mark Sultan PosterThis recording has probably taken the most work to get up here yet, but it was worth it because the Leather Towel set in particular was amazing. Something was fucking up with the dic on this night and, although it didn’t show up on the volume levels when I was there, the volume would randomly spike and distort without warning. At first I thought that the recording was unusable, but upon opening it up in Audacity I realized that it was only on some songs that it happened, and when it did it only affected the right channel. What I ended up doing for these songs was fading it into a mono mix taken from the left channel. It’s not perfect, but it’s a hell of a lot better than it was, and the set was good enough to justify the work. There’s a couple of songs that it still happens in once or twice, I just left these in as it wasn’t worth forgoing the stereo mix for a split second of distortion. Both of these sets were recorded from right up the front, towards the left of the stage.

Although they’ve been around for a while, I don’t think Leather Towel have played many live shows. Featuring members of Ausmutants, Woolen Kits, Ooga Boogas and Knife Fight it’s hardly a surprise that these guys rule, and rule they do. Fast and intence whilst still being catchy as hell, Leather Towel blew me away. So, so fucking good. Download this now. (Edit – Jake helped me out with the blanks in the set list, you’ll have to update the unnamed mp3s with the titles below.)

Total time 24mins

To be honest I wasn’t super into Mark Sultan’s set. For those that don’t know, he’s a one man band that plays non-stop garage rock for the entirety of his set. No breaks, no pauses. This is impressive to begin with, but I gets kinda old by the twenty minute mark. I’ve also made no attempt to split up his set into tracks, as he chops, changes and reprises songs all over the place. He’s definitely talented, but I just wasn’t really feeling it.
