Gurner, Tarcar, Free Choice Duo, Greg Boring – Greg Boring LP Launch, The Gasometer, Collingwood, VIC (2013-06-22)

Greg Boring PosterThis show was the launch of the vinyl pressing of the Greg Boring album Heavy Syrup, held at The Gaso on June 24, 2013 (even though the LP came out in February 2013 (and the original digital edition came out in February 2012!); better late then never though). It was a really great show, Greg Boring in particular were incredible. A few weeks before the gig it was announced that Mark Hosler of Negativland was going to be performing at this show, but his appearance was cancelled a few days prior as he had to make an emergency return to America, which was a massive bummer. Still, a great night overall. Canberra based visual weirdos Zonk Vision projected videos over the bands throughout the night. Every band was recorded from the same position; up front, about two meters back from the stage, off to the left. I’m pretty happy with all the recordings.

GURNER
These three ladies layered loops, instruments, distorted vocals and drum machines to create one continuous dreamy soundscape. Not much more to say abut this set – it definitely has it’s moments.

TARCAR
Tarcar is a relatively new project from Tarquin Manek (Bum Creek) and Carla dal Forno (Mole House). Together, along with their drum machine, they make spacey pop. Can’t find much bout them online; any recordings that I can find are very different to this set.

FREE CHOICE DUO
These guys play extremely repetitive, hypnotic synth music. I thought they were fucking great – the music has that 80s cheap synth soundtrack vibe that reminds me of 16bit video games and sleezy 80s sci-fi movies. Much of the audience didn’t seem  to agree with me though, the room was half empty by halfway through their set.

GREG BORING
These guys were really, really, really fucking good. Really good. If you’re not in the know, Greg Boring is (at least for this performance) Joel Stern (Sky Needle, heaps of other great stuff), Andrew McLellan (Cured Pink, same deal as Joel), Sarah Byrne (Sky Needle) and Josh Watson (Per Purpose, director of the amazing Brisbane 2012 documentary). This recording is essential stuff; without a doubt one of the best shows I have seen this year. The track naming was hard on this one – several of the songs they they play sound quite similar to songs on the LP, but comparing them reveals that they are actually different. For example; the second track uses the same synth line as Fine Find Fined, but the vocals are totally different. Because of this, I opted to leave all the tracks untitled.
